Named Civil War Issue 1859 Manhattan Navy Model Revolver With History Named Civil War Issue 1859 Manhattan Navy Model Revolver With History, 36 Cal. percussion 6 shot single action revolver with walnut grips. Brass trigger guard and back strap. Backstrap shows a period named engraving, reading “Lt. G.H. Perkins, U.S.N., Portsmouth N.H.” This pistol was issued and carried by Lt. Perkins during his service in the Civil War, with is name being showed in the United States Navy Records, having enlisted at age 15, becoming a Midshipman in 1851, Master on April 20 of 1859, and progressing to the rank of lieutenant on Feb. 2nd of 1861, the time at which the pistol was received. He later went on to become Lt. Commander on Dec. 13 of 1862, and later Commander after the Civil War on Jan. 19 of 1871. He was later promoted to Captain on March 10, 1882, and served on the U.S.S. Sumter, New London, Cayuga, Scioto, and Chickasaw, and placed on the retired list on Oct. 1, 1891. a copy of this accompanies the pistol. He is also shown in the New Hampshire War Heroes & Personages in the collection of the New Hampshire State House and State Library, showing him as Captain George Hamilton Perkins, (1835-1899), Born at Hopkinton (NH), and died in Boston (MA). A portrait of him in uniform was done by artist Daniel Strain in 1894, with the portrait residing in the New Hampshire State State . House. The revolver is accompanied with the above files along with a photocopy letter from the State of New Hampshire, with and enclosed photocopy of a page from Augustus Ayling’s Revised Register of the Soldiers and Sailors of New Hampshire in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-66 which summarizes his Civil War service. The Granite Monthly, A New Hampshire Magazine, Volume XXVII, 1899, along with a photocopy of a second volume of the same publication also showing his history. A cabinet card photograph of Cmdr. G.W. Perkins taken in 1874 is also present (as shown in photos with the revolver) The revolver is fitted with a 6 1/2 inch octagon barrel with the naval scene cylinder typical to this maker and model.
