ATLANTIS The story of a German Surface Raider by Mohr and Sellwood Review from Amazon........ The story of Nazi Germany\'s most successful commerce raider of World War Two, sinking over 160,000 tons of Allied shipping. The Atlantis sank twenty-two British and Allied ships during its 110,000 miles and 602 days continuously - at sea until she was sunk by HMS Devonshire. Her exploits in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans over almost two years created huge problems for the Allies as they tried to find the mystery ship with twenty-six disguises. Sinking ship after ship, Atlantis also searched them for documents. Finding secret files on the Automedon regarding British troop dispositions in the Far East, this document hastened Japan\'s entry into the war. Eventually sunk in November 1941, the 350 crew of Atlantis, as Ship 16 had been named, were rescued by U-boat which towed them to the safety of the supply ship Python. Sunk again, four U-boats eventually took the survivors of both Atlantis and Python to safety in France. The story is told by the ship\'s First Officer and was recounted from his diaries kept aboard the Atlantis slightly grubby, minor wear with tears to spine of jacket This edition published by Werner Laurie in 1955, still in print

RUSSIAN REVOLUTION PLAQUE a coppered spelter commemoration plaque of the 1917 Russian revolution which shows the warship Aurora in Petrograd. It has some mounting holes in the back, I have no idea what it was used for, a heavy spelter cast item with some of the edges have been knocked and the copper plate has been chipped or worn away. Unknown year of manufacture but a very nice patina and look to the item, purchased in Moscow in the 1970's At the end of 1916, the ship was moved from the Baltic to Saint Petersburg (then Petrograd) for a major repair. The city was brimming with revolutionary ferment and part of her crew joined the 1917 February Revolution. A revolutionary committee was created on the ship (Aleksandr Belyshev was elected its captain). Most of the crew joined the Bolsheviks, who were preparing for a Communist revolution. On 25 October 1917, the refusal of an order for the Aurora to take to sea sparked the October Revolution. At 9.45 p.m. on that date, a blank shot from her forecastle gun signalled the start of the assault on the Winter Palace, which was to be the last episode of the October Revolution. Aurora's crew actually took part in the attack.
