British War Medal 1914-1918 To Second Lieutenant William Henry Birrell 11th Bn., Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) British War Medal 1914-1918 2 Lieut W.H.Birrell Second Lieutenant William Henry Birrell 8th Bn. posted to 11th Bn., Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) died of Wounds on the 20th September 1918 Age 31 Son of Henry Havelock Birrell and Helen Agnes Birrell; husband of Elizabeth Couper Birrell, of 73, York Drive, Hyndland, Glasgow. Native of Hillhead, Glasgow. Remembered with Honour Karsouli Military Cemetery Greece n 1918, the Allied troops were prepared for a major offensive intended to end the war in the Balkans. It began in July, 1918, but it was not until September that the British joined the action with attacks on a series of fortified hills, beginning on September 15 around the area of Lake Doiran. An unsuccessful assault was launched on September 18, 1918, by the men of the Cheshire Regiment, the East Lancashire Regiment, South Wales Borderers and Greek troops. At 3am the next day, the Cameronians, under the command of Major F W Scougal, was moved up from the Sennelje Camp, where they had been waiting in reserve. But simply moving through the Vladaja Ravine to their assembly positions proved to be an incredibly hazardous task. While they marched through the ravine, the Bulgarian artillery fired gas shells at the area. The sudden outpouring of poisonous gas clouds took the troops by surprise and many did not get their respirators on in time, and fell, choking for breath to the ground. At 5.12am the battalion made it to the assembly area and formed into two waves. They were filling positions in the attack which had previously been held by Greek troops who had failed in their assault on the same objective. Not too far away were lying the bodies of Welsh troops who had also been slaughtered by the Bulgarian defenders. How that vision of horror affected their mental state can only be guessed at. However, it did not hinder their resolve. Charging forward, the Scots fell on the Bulgarian defenders, killing many in deadly hand to hand combat before the remaining enemy troops surrendered. From the Fang, the barrage moved onto the second objective, a position know as the ‘Knot’. But to the right of the 11th Cameronians, an attack by Greek soldiers had failed. After driving back the Greeks, these Bulgarians turned their fire on the Scots, pinning them down. Still they pushed on, attacking a trench between fortifications called ‘Tassel’ and the ‘Tongue’. Heavy machine gun fire from the left held up the regiment, until Corporal T Fisher turned his Lewis Gun on the enemy position, silencing the guns. He was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery. Again the Scots charged. This time fighting was intense, with the troops who reached the trench using bayonets, then knives, knuckle dusters and home made clubs in brutal hand-to-hand fighting. In the end, the bravery and savagery of the Scots won out and the trench was theirs. Again the men pushed forward up the hill, towards the Tassel. But then, directly ahead of them, they were stopped by uncut barbed wire. This time they came under fire from three directions as Bulgarian defenders in uncaptured positions turned their anger at the Cameronians. The Irish Guards in the Great War Book Volume 1 by Rudyard Kipling 1st Edition Published in 1923 Of the many regimental histories published in the wake of the Great War, this has to be the most unique, written as it was by Rudyard Kipling, one of our greatest literary geniuses, about the Regiment in which his only son John briefly served before his tragic disappearance and death in the battle of Loos. Kipling hailed it as his masterpiece : ‘This will be my great work…It is done with agony and bloody sweat’ – a verdict echoed by universal and unanimous critical acclaim. Kipling spent five years in laborious research while writing this book – simultaneously searching in vain for John’s final resting place

The Territorial Force Imperial Service Badge The Territorial Force Imperial Service Badge was a short lived decoration of the United Kingdom awarded to those members of the Territorial Force who were prepared to serve outside the United Kingdom in defence of the Empire. The conditions of enlistment for the TF laid down at their creation in 1908 did not allow for soldiers to be sent for service overseas against their will, as the TF was intended for home defence. However, any man could volunteer for the Imperial Service Section and serve abroad in times of war, which entitled him to wear this badge. The badge was worn on the uniform immediately above the right breast pocket, i.e. the opposite side to any medal ribbons. The majority of those who received the award did so for services during the First World War.

WW1 1915 Sinking of Lusitania (German) Propaganda Medal in Original Box 1915 Sinking of Lusitania (German) Propaganda Medal in Original Box This is a replica of a German medal designed by Karl Goetz. The design was replicated and distributed by the British to demonstrate the brutality of the sinking of the passenger ship, RMS Lusitania. Around 300,000 British copies were made, many of these financed and sold by Gordon Selfridge, the department store owner. In this instance, German propaganda was seized upon by the British to suggest that the sinking of the Lusitania was premeditated. Alternatively the medal can be read as Goetz's critique of the passenger ship company placing profit above the safety of its passengers by disregarding German U-Boat warnings in newspapers. The cast iron medal depicts on the obverse a starboard bow view of the ship sinking, while the reverse shows Death at the Cunard shipping office selling tickets, to a queue of people, for the voyage.

Drury R.A., 80mm., base metal, reverse inscribed, ‘Robert Lyon, M.A.L.L.B. younger son of Sir Alexander & Lady Lyon Captain 5th Gordon Highlanders Killed in Action in France 30th July 1916’, ref. B.H.M. 4150 Robert Lyon was born in Aberdeen on 14 September 1891. He was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and Aberdeen University and gained an M.A. in 1912 and LL.B. in 1914 and was a Hunter Medal winner in Roman Law. He was Clerk to Messrs. Paul & Williamson, Advocates, Aberdeen, 1912-13 and then Clerk to Messrs. Dalgleish, Dobbie & Co., Edinburgh, 1913. Lyon was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion Gordon Highlanders in 1914 and entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 3 May 1915. Having attained the rank of Captain, he was killed in action at Delville Wood on the Somme, on 30 July 1916. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of Sir Alexander Lyon, Kt., D.L., J.P. and Lady Elsie Inglis Lyon of Queen’s Road, Aberdeen. With copy of article from The Cairngorm Club Journal which reads Another member of the Club has made \"the.supreme sacrifice\"—Captain Robert Lyon, of the 5th Gordon Highlanders. He fell in action in France on 30th July in the course of the\" push \" from Albert. He was advancing at the head of his company in face of a withering fire, and, though wounded,he continued to lead, his men on,but was killed in front of the German wire entanglements. Captain Lyon was the younger son of exLord Provost Sir Alexander Lyon (who is also a member of the Club), and had a distinguished career at the University, where he graduated M.A. and LL.B. He was studying for the Scottish bar, and, from his brilliant parts, those acquainted with him confidently anticipated that he would gain great distinction in the profession he had selected. Captain Lyon had been a member of the Club since 1907, having been admitted on the summit of Glas Maolon the occasion of the Summer Excursion of that year. (See the amusing article on \"The Club on Gas Maol\" in Vol. V. of the Journal). He was then only sixteen years
