1914-15 Star Trio Kings Shropshire Light Infantry 1914-15 Star, 8596 Pte W.A. Dibbens. Shrops L.I; British War and Victory medals, 8596 Pte W.A. Dibbens. Shrops L.I. (Mounted as worn) Condition - GVF A CD with the group contains the following information: WILLIAM ALFRED DIBBENS William Alfred Dibbens was born in 1888 in the Chelsea District of London, the 5th of 6 children to Robert and Emily Dibbens. His service number shows that he enlisted between September 26 and October 8, 1907 in the 2nd Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry and was assigned number 8596. His records have not survived, save his MIC, which shows he entered France on Dec. 21, 1914, was disabled on March 31, 1915, and that he was entitled to the 1915 Trio and a SWB. The 2nd Battalion KSLI got to France in late December 1914 and got to the fighting lines by the night of January 7, 1915. On January 8th they marched to Voormezeele and took over trenches covering Bois Confluent. The Battalion remained in the St. Eloi area for several months, and lost many of their men to trench feet and other weather related illness. One then can only assume that his disability was most likely related to trench foot, that being the reason for his discharge. William married Maud Daisy Wingfield, 1 year his senior, on August 2, 1915, and died in March 1932 at age 44, possibly from the effects of his wartime disability

Note: Two Medal Index Cards exist for this recipient. The first states Private D. J. McLean served in the 2nd Dragoons (Regimental Number 5924) from 23 August 1914 and transferred to the Military Mounted Police (Regimental Number 5907) on 1 October 1916. This card shows entitlement to the 1914 Star only and is entirely consistent with the 1914 Star medal roll. The second M.I.C. states Private W. J. McLean served as a Private in the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Regimental Number 5924) and transferred to the Military Foot Police (Regimental Number P-5907) with which unit he served as a Lance Corporal. This card shows entitlement to the British War and Victory Medals only and is consistent with the British War and Victory Medal Roll. The differing first initial cannot be readily explained nor the Military Mounted Police / Military Foot Police discrepancy but the consistent service numbers across both rolls confirm these medals are all to the same man. The listing of 2nd Dragoon Guards rather than 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) on the British War and Victory Medal roll and the second Medal Index Card (and hence the recipient’s British War and Victory Medals) appears to be a clerical error; likewise, it would be most unusual for a cavalryman to have transferred to the Foot, rather that the Mounted, Police
